Flipkart is the Walmart-backed shopping super e-commerce giant in India. The company as recently launched a pilot allowing customers to experience a metaverse environment in which they can make their purchases. The new metaverse called the “Flipverse” became live and several brands so far have been able to offer their own shopping experiences within the platform.
The Flipverse offers the customer the exact same experience in the metaverse as they could find from going to the physical store but with the addition of gamification and loyalty points. Customers will be rewarded with digital collectibles and supercoins from different brands that are already signed up for the program.
The new platform was created via a partnership with eDAO which is an incubated firm on Polygon. The company has already garnered participation from several key companies such as Puma, Noise, Nivea, Lavie, Tokyo Talkies, Campus, VIP, Ajmal Perfumes, and Himalaya. Each of these companies will offer their own tailored experiences and stands within the metaverse of Flipkart.
A spokesperson for Flipkart made the following statement about the venture.
The idea is to have millions of users experience Flipverse and open the doors to the future of shopping. Fifteen years ago, we were the first Indian company to launch Web 2.0-based commerce. And I feel today we are the first company to launch Web 3.0 commerce.
The idea of virtual shopping is not new as many e-commerce companies have toyed with the idea. At the time of this writing, there are very limited offerings of said technology but a video of Walmart’s virtual store has begun to resurface with Flipkart and Polygon both stating there is a big opportunity in this kind of experience.

The co-founder of Polygon had the following to say about how the technology can be used for the idea of virtual shopping:
While we have only just begun to scratch the surface of what’s possible in the metaverse, we see e-commerce as one of the killer use cases. Combining top brands with Flipkart’s e-commerce expertise in a virtual environment stands to revolutionize online retail as we know it.
Walmart is no stranger to the metaverse as the company that owns 72% of Flipkart already has its own metaverse worlds in the Roblox universe, those worlds being Walmart Land and Walmart Universe of Play.
